Instead I ended up at Walmart and Staples too, and lots of compromises. Take for example item # 9 on the list - 2 polyplastic folders (one purple, one yellow) (trust me that objects appearing blue on your screen ARE in fact purple, much to Harrison's horror. "PURPLE???!!!! I HATE purple! Purple is a girl color. If no one else has purple, you are going to be in big trouble mom"
Also no boxes of "16 count" crayons. Everywhere I went, it was the same thing - Crayola box of TWENTY FOUR. In desperation I called my friend Lisa, who was in even worse shape then me "Oh Jan, I emailed Crayola today!" She lamented. "16 count only comes in washable or the chubby kind for preschoolers"
You think teachers would know this stuff!
Item #6 - Dry Erase Markers (pack of 4 or more)....Are those for my son or the teacher, because if they are for Harrison I want a fine tip, if they are for the teacher to use in the front of the classroom I want broad tip.
Also, what happened to binders with designs on the front? Is a Transformer or Star Wars too much to ask for? Apparently, if you need 1.5" hard binding, yes, it is.
Sigh.
Scream.
I know whatever I bought will be "fine"
But what is the fun in that?

Whatever happened to letting the kids be individuals and get what they like??? Sounds like you had a fun filled day. Can't wait till Monday to see the kiddies.
Mom
OMG.
I was equally deflated purchasing Ethan's school supplies when he started K.
Two of the items on the massive list:
6 (six) 8-count Crayola crayons
2 (two) 16-count Crayola crayons
Um, okay. You know the deal with the 16 count. Do you know that the cheapest I could find 8 count was over $2 a box while the 24 count was twenty cents a box at every single store in town?
That was a thorn in my side the entire freaking school year.
torture.
seriously.
We had lists like that in Wyoming, but not so much in Utah. They provide everything, but the teachers can "request" things like wipes, tissues, etc.
(weird. utah needs all the school budget help they can get...)
you know what's worse, you get to school with the correct stuff from the list that you spent hours of timing driving from store to store to find, only to discover they are suggestions and only 1 other kid in the class actually brought the right things and the teacher really doesn't care.
Jan...I have a slew of 16 count crayons at school. I used to order them from the district supply book (i think before the district offered the 24 count crayons), and being the hoarder that I am, I'm sure I have boxes from 2001.
eeeks. What a pain. So many supplies go in the general pot these days that I refused to buy anything remotely fun this year. I can just see a major meltdown when some other kid got the cool transformers folder I bought while my kid is stuck with something else. It wasn't fun for me either but so far I've been able to find everything on our list!
i am with you 100%. I bought very basic stuff for Skylar since it all goes to a general pot and was thinking I could get the fun stuff for Hayden. Instead I got a note asking for $15. Where is the fun in that?
And, since I'm complaining...Piper has to use a school issued backpack. I know Miss Debbie has good reasons but seriously? I don't even get to buy a backpack?
Ugh, that sounds miserable! Why must these lists be so specific? If the teacher wants everything the same then she is better off collecting money and worrying about it herself.
We have yet to receive a supply list, they are supposed to hand them out on Friday, 3 days before schools starts. Hello?!? The sales started in July!
